Multivac R105 – new mould, only what was needed

A mould of its own for a new pack

This 2009 Multivac R105 thermoformer went to a customer in Norway. The heart of this job was the tooling: we built a new mould for the machine, so it forms exactly the pack they need.

A thermoformer is nothing without the right mould. The machine draws the tray from the bottom web, fills it, pulls vacuum and seals the top web onto it. The shape, the depth and the layout of that tray all come from the mould. A different pack means new tooling — and we make that ourselves.

Only doing what is needed

The machine itself was in good working order. A full overhaul would have been money down the drain. So we did what was needed to hand it over clean and properly working: checked over, adjusted where it mattered, cleaned, and tested with the new mould fitted.

That saves cost and time without giving anything away on what leaves our workshop. We look at every machine to see what it really needs — sometimes that is a full overhaul, here it was not.

What we did to this machine

Five points from the job, marked on the machine itself.

The film runs off the reel into the machine. The R105 draws the tray from the bottom web and then seals the top web onto it.

This is where the tooling we built sits. The shape, the depth and the layout of the pack all come from this mould.

The settings were run through and tested with the new mould before the machine was shipped.

Under the cover

Behind the cover sit the drive, the pneumatics and the wiring. That is where the machine was checked over and adjusted — tidily routed and easy to reach for maintenance.

The machine was already running well. We did what was needed to hand it over clean and reliable, without unnecessary cost.

A range of vegetable products, vacuum packed

The machine now runs in Norway, packing various vegetable products. Vacuum in a formed tray keeps the product good for longer and stacks and travels neatly — exactly what you want when the shop is a long way off.
